Languages are all around us, we live in a multilingual global society. Choosing an A Level language is a really good decision if you want a fascinating subject that offers you a range of career options and a lot of fun along the way. Language courses are interesting and varied subjects which give you a broad range of knowledge and transferable skills. Furthermore, a Modern Foreign Language can be studied with a wide range of other subjects at university such as Engineering, Law and even Medicine.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
GCSE 5 or above in GCSE Spanish. If not previously studied at GCSE but Spanish is a second language to you and/or you are at the equivalent level to GCSE 5
or above, this would also allow you access to the course.
WHAT IS THE COURSE CONTENT AND HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Course content: The following themes will be covered –
- Social issues and trends: Aspects of Hispanic society – Modern and Traditional Values,
- Cyberspace, Equal Rights.
- Multiculturalism in Hispanic society : Immigration, Racism, Integration, Political and Artistic Culture.
- Artistic culture in the Hispanic world: modern day idols, Spanish Regional Identity, Cultural Heritage. Aspects of political life in the Hispanic World: Today’s Youth, Monarchs and Dictatorships, Popular movements.
SPEAKING ASSESSMENT – (30%) 16-18 MINUTES
Task 1 is a presentation of an independent research project (2 minutes) followed by a discussion (9-10 minutes).
Task 2 is a discussion based on a stimulus card (5 minutes preparation followed
by 5-6 minutes discussion).
LISTENING, READING AND TRANSLATION – (50%) 2HRS 30 MINUTES
CRITICAL RESPONSE IN WRITING (20%)
Two hour examination comprising of two essay questions, one based on the play La Casa de Bernarda Alba and one based on the film Volver
